Summary from Goodreads
A heartbroken girl. A fierce warrior. A hero in the making.
Sixteen years ago the Kingdom of Winter was conquered and its citizens enslaved, leaving them without magic or a monarch. Now, the Winterians’ only hope for freedom is the eight survivors who managed to escape, and who have been waiting for the opportunity to steal back Winter’s magic and rebuild the kingdom ever since.
Orphaned as an infant during Winter’s defeat, Meira has lived her whole life as a refugee, raised by the Winterians’ general, Sir. Training to be a warrior—and desperately in love with her best friend, and future king, Mather — she would do anything to help her kingdom rise to power again.
So when scouts discover the location of the ancient locket that can restore Winter’s magic, Meira decides to go after it herself. Finally, she’s scaling towers, fighting enemy soldiers, just as she’s always dreamed she would. But the mission doesn’t go as planned, and Meira soon finds herself thrust into a world of evil magic and dangerous politics – and ultimately comes to realize that her destiny is not, never has been, her own.
The story is basically about Meira and some other characters that kind of revolve around her (this already sounds very promising for a good review..). Meira is one of the total of 8 refugees that managed to escape Winter when it was attacked by Spring, and that are still alive. They must find both halves of their conduit that was broken during the war. This is the only way to save what is left of their kingdom… Well, that’s what they think must happen.
I love Meira as a character. She’s a teenager with a strong will to rebuild her kingdom, that she has never really seen to begin with. Her heart is also with the Crown Prince Mather, whom she can’t be with since he is their Crown Prince and all.
None of the characters in this book really made me cringe and there were none that I really hated.
However, there was definitely some emotion during some sort of battle but I won’t go into too much detail because of spoilers (it can be difficult to write a review because of this actually).
I feel like the story was well thought out. With this I really mean that everything worked well together. This doesn’t mean that you couldn’t possibly see the plot twist coming. I thought it was actually really predictable once you were reading but this doesn’t make it a bad twist! (Although I feel like I didn’t give the book 5/5 stars because the plot twist was so predictable).
This is definitely a book that I’d want to read again.
